Giving Thanks & Giving Back: Helping the Elderly Stay Warm During the Cold Winter Months

Matt Polsinello - Friday, November 21, 2014

Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It seems like just yesterday that we were talking about air conditioning. And since, the spirit of Thanksgiving is all about showing gratitude for your good fortune and giving to those who need it, try out these ideas for helping the elderly stay warm during the colder months. Express your thanks this season by doing the following 3 things for those in your family or community:

Help the Elderly Cut Down on Energy Use This Winter

  1. Have you or a friend seal air leaks. One of the best ways is to use weather stripping and insulate attic hatches and doors. This will help prevent the escape of warm air. While you’re at it, see if you can help install their storm windows and put screens in storage.
  2. Furnace neglect and dirt build up can cause a heating system failure. Don’t be shy, help schedule a fall checkup and get their heating system operating at peak performance.
  3. Help insulate water pipes to ensure pipes don’t burst — this also keeps warm water pipes warm and reduces the calls to the furnace or boiler when hot water is demanded from the taps.

This Thanksgiving season, focus on family and friends, but don’t forget those who are less fortunate or those who might not be able to do for themselves.

Have yourself a very Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Polsinello Fuels!
