What to do if You Smell Propane in Your Home

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, July 07, 2015

Propane is a fuel that comes from oil refining and natural gas processing. It is used by over 60 million Americans for heat, hot water, cooking, fireplaces, dryers, vehicles, swimming pool heaters and more, making it one of the most versatile fuels in existence. Since propane is naturally colorless and odorless, odorant is added so it can be more easily detected. It is very serious if you smell propane in your home, so you need to be sure to take the appropriate measures.

If you smell propane in your home, here is what you should do to ensure the safety of yourself and others:

  • Leave the building immediately
  • Do not turn light switches on or off
  • Do not do anything that can cause a spark (using a lighter, smoking, using hairspray, etc.)
  • Leave doors open
  • If it is safe, turn off the gas supply at the tank
  • Do not re-enter the building if you are outside
  • Once you are safe, call your gas supplier and emergency personnel
  • Keep yourself and others out of the building until help arrives
