What Does Your Oil Provider Offer You?

Matt Polsinello - Wednesday, March 19, 2014

In recent years, there have been several mergers of local oil companies. When these mergers are done right, there is care and consideration for the adjustments customers may have to make. Not all oil companies are the same, customers should consider what they are looking for in an oil company and ask the right questions. Below are a few questions you should ask your new oil company to make sure you receive the service you are accustomed to.

Q: Does your new oil company offer dependable service?

A: Not all oil companies have a full time service department. Make sure you are protected, by finding an oil company that can offer 24-hour emergency service by trained technicians. Being stranded without heat in the middle of the night is never a good position to be in.

Q: Does your new oil company offer service agreements?

A: A service agreement can be worth its weight in gold and other times they are not worth the paper they were printed on. The words “service agreement” mean different things to different people. A true service agreement should include annual maintenance and cover parts and labor for major service repairs. However, some oil companies’ versions of a service agreement are a fee that allows you to be their customer and includes an annual cleaning. Read your service agreement before you pay for an overpriced cleaning and you don’t get the coverage you deserve.

Q What is the Price?

A: As important as this question sounds, it should only be a part of your overall decision of which provider to do business with. Choosing an oil company based on price alone can often lead to disappointment. The cheapest oil is usually not the best oil and rarely does the service of a discount oil company match that of a full service oil company.

Q: How do the oil price protection programs work?

A: Most reputable oil companies offer some form of seasonal or annual price protection for heating oil. These programs save customers hundreds every year. However, be cautious because not all price protection programs are the same. Many oil companies charge an annual enrollment fee to participate in the programs, which can actually increase the cost per gallon substantially. Also, read the fine print and make sure you are comfortable with the terms of the agreement.
