Got Spring Allergies? Here’s how Your Furnace/AC Filter Can Help!

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, April 05, 2016

Your furnace and air conditioning systems are very important when it comes to keeping the climate of your home at a comfortable level. However, these systems circulate the warm and cold air through your home allowing allergens and dust to enter and infiltrate the air you breathe. If you or anyone in your home is an allergy sufferer, then you know that keeping dust and allergens out is ideal.

One great way to keep allergens from circulating your home this spring (and the rest of the year) is to make sure you have a clean furnace filter in place. This will keep the air coming into your home through the system as clean as possible, resulting in less irritation for those with allergies. Additionally, these filters will save you money over time by allowing your system to run efficiently.

Polsinello Fuels is committed to providing the best possible service to our customers. Contact us today to discuss your heating, air conditioning, or oil delivery needs!

What Makes Today’s Furnaces So Much More Energy Efficient?

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Today’s furnaces are known for being more energy efficient and money-saving than ever. But what makes these furnaces so much better than they used to be? Improvements have been made over time to how furnaces are built and how they work, resulting in a more cost-effective, energy-saving system for you.

Here are some of the reasons why today’s furnaces tend to be more energy-efficient.

  • They have a 2nd heat exchanger to get heat from the exhaust gasses that are usually just vented out of the home.
  • They ignite electronically, instead of with a pilot light, only when needed.
  • The blower adjusts speeds to save energy when not as much speed is needed.
  • Two stage heating – a lower stage is kept running normally to save energy, but there is an available second stage that can turn on when needed for extreme cold.
  • Sealed combustion lets the furnace draw air from outside, as opposed to from the heated air around your home.

How to Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, February 23, 2016

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 400 people unintentionally die annually from Carbon Monoxide (CO2) poisoning in America. No human or animal is immune to its effects. A lot of the time, the victims don’t even know they are being poisoned, and it is something that could have been stopped in its tracks, or even prevented to begin with.

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas found in fumes created by burning fuel. Most of the time, Carbon Monoxide is expelled into the open air and dissipates, causing no harm. However, if allowed to build up, the gas can kill anyone who breathes it in for a certain amount of time.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is definitely a scary thought, but there are some things you can do to help reduce your risk and put your mind at ease.

  • First and foremost: install a battery-powered CO2 detector in your home. Test it and replace the batteries in the spring and fall (each time you turn your clocks back or forward).
  • Make sure all of your gas equipment (stove, heater, etc) are in proper working order and have them serviced and maintained regularly.
  • Be sure there is proper ventilation anywhere that fuel is burned and gas is produced.
  • Do not turn on your car while it is still in the garage with the garage door closed. If you accidentally do this for too long, you could pass out before you have a chance to save yourself!
  • Have your chimney cleaned and checked every year – CO2 can build up in your home behind a clogged chimney.
  • Never use generators, portable gas stoves, or portable flameless chemical heaters indoors.

By taking these precautionary measures, you put yourself, your family, and your guests at a lower risk of harm. You can always contact Polsinello Fuels with any concerns you may have about CO2 and your home, and remember to ALWAYS report any suspected gas leaks ASAP!

What is the Perfect Temperature for Your Water Heater?

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Hot water is used for many tasks within your home. From washing dishes to cleaning your clothes, hot water is a necessity. Some folks tend to set their water heater to a temperature that is much higher than necessary. This can result in scalding, as well as an increase in your utility bill.

According to energy.gov, the ideal temperature that your water heater should be set at is 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This is about 20 degrees cooler than most manufacturers suggest, yet it has become evident that having it set any higher for long periods of time is unnecessary. Here’s why:

  • It will save you money. A lower temperature = lower utility bills. To save even more, turn the temperature even lower (or off) if you are going to be away from your home for 3 or more days.
  • You reduce your chance of scalding. At this temperature, even your faucet’s hottest setting won’t scald. This is especially important if there are small children in the household.
  • It will slow mineral buildup and corrosion. 120 degrees is the perfect temperature to hinder these issues. Buildups inevitably occur over time when water is heated inside the metal pipes, so setting your water heater at a lower temperature will slow this process significantly.

Remember, it is best to turn the cold water on first, and then add hot water as needed until you reach the temperature you prefer. Always teach children to turn off the hot water first, followed by the cold water to keep them from accidentally getting the water too hot.

A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to have your water running on its hottest setting, and still be able to hold your hand in the stream of water comfortably. If you can only quickly put your hand in the water and then remove it, the setting is too high!

Contact Polsinello Fuels today to discuss your water heater needs!

What to Do When Your Heating System Breaks Down

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, February 02, 2016

Your heating system is what keeps you comfortable during the colder months of the year, and like any piece of equipment, it can break down. So what do you do? The first thing you should do is call Polsinello Fuels Inc. at 518-465-3535 because we offer 24/7 emergency service. There are few things that you should do next to make sure you’re able to stay warm before our team stops by.

  1. Put on Extra Layers – Putting on an additional sweater, pair of socks, or sweat pants can make you feel a lot warmer. Don’t hesitate to wrap up in a blanket or even put on a jacket if need be! Getting too cold can be dangerous and taking care of yourself is a top priority.
  2. Make Sure Every Window is Shut – Go through your house and make sure every last window is shut and locked. Windows left open, even a crack can act as a drain for warm air to come out of your house, and cold air to come right in.
  3. Use Your Fireplace – Fireplaces are something that we sometimes think of as a decoration. If your heating system goes out, it’s still there to serve its original purpose!
  4. Turn on a Space Heater – We recommend turning on a single space heater to keep warm. It is a quick way to heat up a room. If used improperly, they can be dangerous. Follow all directions and the appropriate precautions.

Do not hesitate to contact our trained professionals at Polsinello Fuels if you need assistance with your heating system.
