Is Your Cloudy Tap Water Caused by a Problem with your Hot Water Heater?

Matt Polsinello - Friday, September 30, 2016

When you turn on your faucet and water that appears cloudy and “milky” comes out, it’s justifiable to be concerned. Although it usually does not pose a health risk, you will want to determine the underlying cause of the cloudy water in order to correct the issue.

If Your Cold Water is Cloudy:

  • If water from all of your cold water taps are cloudy, it is most likely caused by air in the municipal supply. To check this, fill a glass with cold water and watch it for a few minutes. The water should clear from the bottom upward. If the water is still cloudy after 24 hours, it might be wise to call the water bureau and ask if there’s maintenance being done or a possible leak in the system.
  • If cloudiness is only occurring at one of your faucets, it is probably a problem with the aerator. Take off the aerator, clean it with a half-water, half-vinegar solution, rinse it thoroughly and reinstall. This should take care of the problem.

If Your Hot Water is Cloudy:

  • To test the reason your hot water looks cloudy, run it briefly and fill a glass. Much like with the cold water test, you’re going to want to watch the way the water clears. If the cloudiness dissipates from the bottom upwards, the cloudiness is caused by the release of pressurized air. If water clears at the top first and particles are settling at the bottom of the glass, you’ll want to have your water heater checked.

Different Uses for Propane

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, September 27, 2016

You’ve heard of propane, but do you know about all the ways you can use it to become more energy-efficient? There are several ways residential customers can use propane. Here are just a few:

  • Pool/Spa/Hot Tub Heaters – These heaters come in several different sizes, and are available for both in-ground and above-ground models. Not only do propane heaters work faster than electric heaters to get the water to a perfect temperature, they generally conserve energy as well, making them much more cost-efficient.
  • Clothes Dryers – Propane dryers are more efficient and less expensive to run than electric dryers. They tend to cut drying time in half because they heat up faster, and can save about half the cost of electric dryers.
  • Water Heaters – Propane water heaters tend to be smaller than electric heaters, and come in more sizes, with installation and venting options. Their temperature adjustment is more precise, and they offer on-demand heat, which eliminates the need to keep water heated in the tank, saving a great percentage on a home’s annual heating costs.
  • Furnaces – On average, propane heat costs half as much as heating with electricity, and the furnaces last 5-10 years longer than electric heat pumps. There is no need for a chimney with propane heating systems, as they can be vented either vertically or horizontally. Propane can also keep spaces warm and comfortable during electric power outages, which is extremely beneficial, especially for areas that are more likely to get hit with severe winter storms.

Set Your Thermostat to be Energy-Efficient

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, September 20, 2016

Programmable thermostat’s can make a great difference in energy-efficiency, but you have to take advantage of their potential in order to do so. Use these programming tips to save energy (and money) all year-round:

  • Use the schedule settings on your thermostat to lower your heat/air-conditioning at the time you leave for work, and then increase it about 30 minutes before you expect to return home.
  • Utilize the day settings to program different settings for the weekend and weekdays.
  • Program your thermostat to reduce/increase the temperature (depending on if you’re using heating or air-conditioning) about 30 minutes before you go to bed. Set the program to turn back to your comfortable temperature when 30 minutes before your alarm goes off in the morning.
  • To save the maximum amount of energy, it is recommended to set the thermostat to 68°F when using heating, and 78°F for air-conditioning as your “comfortable” at-home setting.
  • Be sure to override your standard programming and shut down your system altogether when going out of town. The only thing to keep in mind is that you’ll want to be sure to keep the temperature over 55°F to avoid your pipes from freezing, and keep in mind the comfort of any pets that may be left in the home while you’re away. Even so, you can certainly set the temperature much lower or higher than your typical comfort level if you’ll be away from your home.

By using these tips, you can watch your savings increase on your energy bills year-round! If you’re in need of a new heating or air conditioning appliance, contact the professionals at Polsinello Fuels, Inc. for even more ways to save!

Four Ways to Prepare Your Home for Cooler Weather

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Now that we’re in September, it’s official – summer is coming to an end. It’s time to start preparing your home for cooler weather, and you can begin now with these four tasks:

  1. Check for Air Leaks

Before you start heating your home again, it’s important to make sure the warm air will stay in. Check around door frames and windows for any cracks that may allow the warm air to escape. Use caulk to seal cracks in stationary places, and weatherstripping to seal movable components, such as a window.

  2. Seal and Insulate Ducts

With central heating, it’s important to make sure your ducts are properly sealed and insulated, otherwise you risk losing air that moves through them.

  3. Give Your Furnace Some TLC

Call Polsinello to schedule your annual tune-up to be sure that removal of sediment build-up is taken care of. This build-up can cause the system to work less efficiently, or worse, it can become a fire hazard.

  4. Perform a Home Energy Audit

Get a full picture of what can be done to make your home more energy-efficient by enrolling in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, after which Polsinello Fuels will schedule your Energy Audit.

  5. Doing these simple tasks as we move into the fall months will help your home to become more energy-efficient, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars this winter! If you want to take the next step and add energy-saving appliances to your home, contact the professionals at Polsinello Fuels, Inc.

Bock Water Heaters

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, August 09, 2016

We are selective about the brands we carry and install, and we’re proud to work with Bock Water Heaters, Inc. here at Polsinello Fuels!

Bock Water Heaters began in 1929, when Oscar Bock established a manufacturing company to produce products of his invention. The company began manufacturing oil burners as a response to the escalating use of heating oil to replace coal as an energy source, and within a few years, the company was also manufacturing gas and oil-fired water heaters. As time went on, Bock grew to become North America’s largest manufacturer of oil-fired water heaters, as well as a leading producer of residential indirect and commercial gas water heaters. The company grew a reputation for building high-quality products of unsurpassable quality.

Today, Bock manufactures water heaters that are designed to operate on any fuel, including:

  • Solar
  • Geothermal
  • Natural Gas
  • Propane
  • Oil
  • Electricity

Working closely with Bock allows us to service our water heater customers, no matter what type of solution they need.

What Makes Polsinello a Leader in Propane

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, July 26, 2016

The most crucial deciding factor when choosing a propane company most often is pricing. At Polsinello Fuels Inc., we pride ourselves on being a leader in the propane industry.

Propane pricing is wildly unpredictable. What some don’t realize is that the hydrocarbon that is propane goes through a long journey before we bring it to your tank! First, it must be produced during natural gas processing and crude oil refining, before it is stored and shipped out to the U.S. markets in a myriad of ways. Every step of this process affects propane prices!

You may notice that propane companies can have vastly different prices. Unfortunately, some try to trick consumers by offering low prices and then tack on several fees and charges that they may not be upfront about. Or they might develop a confusing system of pricing per gallon used. Polsinello does not have any hidden fees or charges, and our competitive prices are easy to understand.

In addition to our straightforward propane prices, we have developed several Price Protection Programs. These programs were developed so we can offer large discounts, as well as a defense against high propane prices. Although we cannot control propane prices, we work tirelessly to ensure that our customers receive the very best pricing and programs around!

What to Look for In an Air Conditioning System

Matt Polsinello - Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Selecting an air conditioner deserves some time and research. Not only will it keep your home or business cool, but the system you choose will play a key role in your energy expenses for years to come.

What Should I Look for in a Central Air Unit?

  • Low Maintenance
  • Proper size for your needs
  • Efficiency and low in energy costs
  • Overall Comfort

One of the most important things to decide on is what size air conditioner will best fit your needs. Obviously, if the unit or system is too small, it will not keep the space sufficiently cool. However, if you have an oversized system, it will turn on and off more than necessary, which will waste energy and may even put strain on the compressor.

This is why we’re here to help! Polsinello will help you determine the correct size for your home or business. We are proud to carry and install Rheem’s line of products, including an air conditioning system with one of the highest energy efficiency ratings out there.

Give us a call today and let us help find the best system for you!
