Does Your Oil Tank Need to be Replaced? How to Know!

Matt Polsinello - Monday, September 29, 2014

You may not give much thought to your oil tank, but it’s one of the most important systems in your home.

Moisture and sediment get trapped inside your tank as time goes by. These accumulations can cause the tank to start deteriorating from the inside out. Because of this, the tank can appear perfectly fine from the outside, but can actually be corroding on the inside.

When a tank fails, it usually begins as a small pin hole, and you’ll notice a drop of oil beginning to escape. However, there have also been instances of larger scale failures, where a considerable amount of oil has spilled from the tank all at once. If that oil isn’t immediately contained and sinks into the soil, you have the potential for a hazardous waste cleanup situation on your hands, which can be very expensive. Even if your basement floor is concrete and you do contain the spill, the oil can leave a lingering odor and stain that’s tough to deal with. Call Polsinello immediately if you experience this.

If you don’t see leaks and it’s not time to replace the tank, you should know that the tank will have a layer of sludge and sediment in the bottom of it. If you allow the oil level in the tank to get too low, and some of that material is drawn into the fuel lines and into the furnace, you run the risk of clogging the lines, and also potentially damaging the furnace itself.

Call us at Polsinello Fuels to inspect your oil tank and determine if it’s time for a replacement.

Buying a House? How to Know if the Water Heater Will Last

Matt Polsinello - Monday, September 15, 2014

There are many things people look for when buying a home: location, appearance, age, design, etc. But it can be easy to overlook some of the house’s basic components, such as having a fully functional water heater.

At Polsinello Fuels, we know that several things can go wrong, such as:

Pilot light on gas water heater flickers out.
Circuit breaker for an electric heater trips.
Burner or heating element fails.
Thermostat breaks.
Valve sticks.

Ask the seller if they’ve had any problems with the hot water heater, both recently and in previous years. If the tank is more than 10 years old, or if it’s leaking, a new water tank is the solution.

On the bright side, modern water heaters are far more energy-efficient than older models and will save you money in fuel costs.

Something else to remember: Whether the hot water heater will perform better and last longer if you have the tank cleaned yearly to remove sediment. A bonus: Without all that gunk inside, your water heater will operate more efficiently, also saving you money.

We recommend you learn what you can about the hot water heater before you make any offer on a house, because it could cost you money down the line.

We’re here if you need repairs or replacement of your hot water heater. Call us today for an appointment for an inspection.

What To Do Before you Put Out the For Sale Sign

Matt Polsinello - Monday, September 08, 2014
If you’re thinking about selling your home, you want it to not only look its best, you need your major systems to be updated and functioning their best.

At Polsinello Fuels, we’d like to remind you to not overlook your air conditioning system and water heater! Put these items on your checklist to ensure you’ll be getting the full value of your home when a potential buyer makes an offer.

A central air conditioning system significantly increases the value of your home. In the Northeast, we rely on central air to get us through the long, humid days of summer. If your system isn’t functioning properly, now’s the time to have it checked, repaired or updated.

You also need to think about your water heater. Conventional storage tank water heaters generally have a lifespan of 10 to 13 years. If yours is this age, it’s time to replace it. Good news: new models are up to 20% more efficient and can save the new homeowner up to $700 in energy costs over the life of the unit. That’s a great selling point.

A fully functional air conditioning system and water heater that’s working properly are major assets to your home during the selling process, so don’t overlook their importance.

At Polsinello Fuels, we’re experts at upgrading your central air and hot water heater so you can get the best price for your home. Call us today!

Repair or Replace: Do you Need a New Boiler?

Matt Polsinello - Wednesday, August 20, 2014
thermostat and a boiler

You don't realize how much you and your family rely on your boiler until it breaks down. Then, you’re left with freezing cold showers, no heat and an enormous bill for emergency repairs. If you keep paying to have your boiler repaired, it might be time to invest in a new one.

Be More Efficient

Getting a new boiler can be expensive, but if your current one is older than 10 years, you should start thinking about having it replaced. While the cost might give you the chills, boilers account for around 60% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so getting an efficient boiler can make a big difference and actually save you money on your heating bills.

Save Energy

Look for a high-efficiency boiler carrying the Energy Star logo. These models are equipped with innovative new energy-saving technologies. In fact a new, high-efficiency boiler could cut your heating bills by up to 40%, so you'll see savings and help protect the environment at the same time.

Here’s the final word:

It's better not to wait until your boiler breaks down before looking for a new one as you'll probably end up paying more for it that way. If your boiler is old, it may become more costly for repairs. Call us now for a free estimate so that you don't make a panic buy that will cost you even more!
